[Izuku shakes his head as he takes a seat on the floor.]
No...nothing. The last time I saw him--well, he wouldn't have been able to talk to me anyway. I found him as a statue near the forest a little while ago... and then after that, he was gone.
I don't know if he even realized he'd be disappearing.
[The week spent on Hell Island? Terrible. Absolutely terrible, but after a day or so spent resting and eating non-fishy foods, Ochako feels... okay, more or less. It's a process, okay. She's getting there.
But she can only stay in bed and watch Busta bounce around for so long. That's why she's here! On Deku's doorstep! Cracking open the front door to peek her head inside! Knocking is for chumps.]
[Whatever way she phrases it, Izuku would still worry, honestly. Save your energy for other things, Ochako!!]
Y-yeah, you and Shouto were really out of it when I saw you guys that time. It's good to see you're looking better now. [With a determined sort of look, Izuku places his hands on her shoulders and gently steers her into one of the kitchen chairs.]
Want some hot cocoa? I still have some left. [No better person to offer it to than Ochako, and he hopes that something sweet will give her an extra boost in mood.]
[Chocolate. There's no way she can turn that down, but she still has to throw out a half-hearted—]
I-It's okay, Deku-kun. You don't have to make it...
[But is she hoping he does? Um, yes? And when he inevitably starts bustling around to get everything together, she settles back in her chair and tries not to jump up and help.]
There's enough for two people, right? If there's only enough for one, let's split it!
Don't worry, there's enough for both of us! I got a can of the powder from one of the quests.
[Even if there wasn't, Izuku would give it all to her anyway. A couple scoops of the cocoa into hot water and tada! He slides a worn-looking mug across the table to her while taking a seat himself.] Here you go!
[She definitely knows that he'd give away his last bit of hot chocolate in a heartbeat, which is why she simply can't help but to smile down at the mug she's carefully cradling between both hands.]
Thanks! It smells really good.
[Maybe it's because she huddled in gross-smelling caves for a solid week, or maybe it's because Deku made it especially for her? Hmm! Things definitely are better when they're made by a good friend...]
It's nice to be back, you know? Everything that happened was weird, but... I think the worst part was being separated from so many people. [She takes an experimental little sip, quickly deciding to let it cool down even longer. Yowch.] I'm glad you weren't there, Izuku-kun, but I still missed you. I was so worried!
[Switchin' it up to Izuku-kun! She's clearly taking this seriously.]
[Using his first name.. wow, this is serious. Despite the worry he feels still lingering, Izuku can't help but smile at her warmly in the end. Actually, hold that thought.
Izuku sets his cup aside so he can cover her hands with his. It still amazes him sometimes, that he can do this now, that they've reached this level of closeness.]
I was really worried about you, too. When you disappeared.. [Let's just say it wasn't a good week for Izuku either.] It was such a relief when we found you guys.
It was huge relief to see you guys, too! ...I don't think anyone had a good time.
[The truth, accompanied by a rather weak smile. Like, yes, her group had to fend off sirens, but the members of the other group were apparently incredibly ill, so... damn. It's enough to make her sigh.]
I hope we're not split up like that again. And if we are, then I hope we're on the same team next time! I know that sounds selfish, [she says a touch sheepishly, twisting her mug around,] but it's just better when we're together, you know? We make a good team.
I get it. [Izuku shakes his head, pulling his hands back.] It's not selfish, Ochako-san. I think we make a good team, too--it's easier to handle everything this place throws at us together, right?
[What a hypocrite, when he's wondered the very same thing when he wished to stay close to his friends, too. Izuku pulls his cup toward him now, staring into it. Quietly, he says--] I didn't like being separated from you guys.
[Like the trails from a couple months earlier, except worse.]
[Much worse, but hey—it's over! That's the one bright spot that she, in typical Ochako fashion, is trying very hard to focus on, so... she's just going to flash him an even wider smile before taking a sip of her hot chocolate.]
It was awful, but at least we're all back together now. I'm glad!
[There! Positivity! But it's time... to get sappy.]
And in a way, it kind of made me appreciate you even more. I mean, I always appreciate you, but... it's like being apart made me think about everything I like about you? The stuff that makes you different from Todoroki-kun, or Kaoru-chan, or—everyone else. [She pauses for a moment, humming as she thinks back to their previous friendship conversation so very long ago.] Izuku-kun, you know... that you're one of my best friends, don't you?
Ochako-san... [You can't just spring something like that on him! Unprepared as he is, Izuku immediately starts tearing up--but she probably expected that.]
You're one of my best friends, too. You...you already know that you were my first friend. [There's Bakugou, as always, but that's a complicated relationship at its very core. Did Bakugou even consider them friends before things went sour? Izuku doesn't know if he'll ever have a chance to ask.
He gives her a watery smile over the rim of his cup.] You were one of the first people to show me kindness in a long time. I don't think I'd be the same person if I hadn't met you during the entrance exam. [She's changed a lot of things for him, a real friendship, a new meaning to an old insult... Izuku knows that he owes her a lot.] You're the reason I can be the Deku that can do his best.
[Ochako isn't the least bit surprised to see the tears welling up in his eyes, but she is surprised when things begin to look a bit... blurrier around the edges. Emotions are contagious, apparently! Not that she's about to full-on cry; it's just, you know, been a really long week, and everything he's saying hits her right in the heart.]
Maybe I helped a little, but it's all you, Izuku-kun. [The Legend of Deku.] No matter how many times you get knocked down, you always get back up and give it your all. You're the toughest person I know!
[There's another lengthy pause as she fidgets with her mug, because what she wants to express... is obvious, she thinks, but she's never had to actually say it before. Hmm.]
And you never let it get to you! You just keep moving forward with a smile. [And she returns his watery smile with a watery smile of her own, although she absolutely refuses to let the tears fall.] ...I really admire that about you.
[It's probably for the best that Ochako doesn't end up actually crying, because that would definitely set Izuku off even more. It's practically reflexive! He can't help it. Don't mind him as he quickly scrubs at his eyes.]
You took the words right out of my mouth. [After a stunned sort of pause (wow, she really thinks that about him?), Izuku gives a weak sort of chuckle as he gestures at her.] You're the one who always keeps going with a smile, Ochako-san. It feels like...you're always there to help pick me up when I'm feeling down, even when you're feeling the same, too.
[She leans across the table, reaching out to place her hand on top of his. A few months ago, this kind of contact would have been unthinkably awkward; now, however, it just feels so... friendly? So natural. It's why the things he's saying about her, as happy as they make her feel, don't send her shooting to the ceiling.]
It's like... even though being here isn't the best, it did bring us closer together. That's why I was so sad to be apart from you for that long! I just feel better when you're around. [And it's the same way for him, apparently, which is wild to think about!! Whoa!! She never stopped to think that maybe Deku—Deku—appreciated having her around, but—nope, nope, she's definitely not going to cry. Watch her blink away those tears as quickly as she can.] I-I'm always here for you, and I know that you're always here for me.
[ she's been here for a bit, but things still aren't quite... settling for her. maybe it's just the dissonance between being stuck in a place and the powerlessness slash peace she feels regarding that? who ever heard of an aimless robot, honestly...
so, aigis is prone to wandering. it's more often than not that she comes to the edges of the forest--her gaze looming there for what is probably longer than acceptable. she's heard more than enough warnings about the forest when she first got here to take it seriously, but it's still... there.
and apparently, today, something else is there too? or rather... someone, on the outskirts. ]
Hm...?
[ she doesn't need to scan the unfamiliar figure to realize this isn't someone she's met before, and she doesn't need to be a genius to consider what their hanging around the edges of Danger McDangerland means.
so, she approaches. hope she's not interrupting anything, izuku, but! here's the somewhat odd-looking girl in a school uniform approaching, her expression a mix of friendly and slightly concerned. ]
Excuse me... I was told it was dangerous to linger around here on your own.
[Even if Izuku's actually capable of handling himself in the forest, Aigis is still right to worry about him. He pauses after finishing his round-house kick and glances back at her.]
Hey! [Is the bright greeting she gets, a smile curling at his lips.] Whoever told you that wasn't wrong. It is usually dangerous to go in by yourself.
You don't have to worry about me, though. [Anyone who's known him for a while would say that's a complete lie.] I've been in here pretty often already.
[ sorry, aigis didn't quite expect that kind of sunniness in response to what is essentially a very dangerous warning, so. give her a second. ]
Oh... Um, hello.
[ okay! she manages that. now, this is where any sane person would be like *squints* and be a little suspicious, but she decides to take izuku completely at face value. after all, he seemed... confident. not that she isn't still concerned, but. yeah.
if he's been in there before, he wouldn't be acting that way if he couldn't handle himself, would he?
(aigis, no.) ]
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to doubt your abilities. It's difficult for me to determine who's new or not, since I've just arrived here recently.
[ just! getting that out of the way. he doesn't see the type to get offended now that she's collected her bearings, but it doesn't hurt to be polite.
maybe it'll distract from the way her curiosity is clear in her eyes when he mentions being in there pretty often. she can't help it, not when that silly forest is concerned-- ]
That's okay! This place takes some getting used to. [From the way his smile hasn't wavered at all, Aigis was definitely on point about him not being offended! Actually, he seems to be smiling even more at her now.] Besides, it's not a bad thing for you to be worried about other people! Making friends, sticking together--it's what's helped us get through everything so far.
Ah, I'm Izuku Midoriya, by the way. [There's just a hint of bashfulness now, like Izuku's suddenly remembered that he's talking to a new girl--a pretty one!] What about you?
with how dull the surroundings are, aigis has to wonder why the characters here are always so unbelievably bright. the way she smiles in return certainly isn't as sunny, but she tries to match his friendliness. hopefully it's working?
(and yes, she is completely oblivious to that bashfulness and the reasons for that.) ]
Aigis, Izuku-san. You're right that depending on each other is how we'll get through all of this, so... It is nice to meet you.
[ truly. this would definitely be 1000 times more overwhelming without people like izuku around.
[It's definitely working! Whatever Aigis might feel about her smile, Izuku can sense her sincerity, and that's enough for him.] It's nice to meet you, Aigis-san.
Oh, this? Yeah. It's out of the way of the main buildings so I don't accidentally hit anything when I'm working on my accuracy and speed, not to mention it lets me keep an eye on the forest in case there's any trouble. Not that there's always trouble from there, it's just that it's good to keep the danger in mind... [Luckily, Izuku realizes that he's rambling on about something she didn't even ask, and he quickly stops himself with a nervous, stuttering laugh.]
A-anyway! This is one of my favorite spots to train. Were you looking for someplace like that, too?
[ he's like a rambly akihiko... not that aigis really considers him rambly--if anything, she's listening attentively to his every word.
so he's friendly... he seems reliable, and he pays attention to the needs and risks of others. he's definitely a good person... though perhaps that's a bit too analytical. ]
No, I...
[ hm. she doesn't want to make it seem as if he's talking too much, and she certainly doesn't mind that, so--maybe a little more information on her end wouldn't hurt either. ]
I've never had much need for training, so it hasn't crossed my mind to look for a place to do it. I just come here to... um, think sometimes.
[ it's in her programming, and tartarus was usually good practice. so... usually, there wasn't any need to actively pursue it. ]
[Immediately, Izuku forgets the flicker of embarrassment, sympathy welling up in his eyes instead.] I guess you'd be doing a lot of that. Thinking, I mean. You've only been here a few days.
[Now, there's something eager-to-please in the way he leans in toward her slightly.] Anything I could help with? You've probably got a bunch of your questions answered already, but if there was anything else....
